DESCRIPTION: EPW - Smith & Son, London, verge fusee doctor's watch with calendar, center-seconds and hacking function, 55mm, gilt OF original pair cases, inner with incuse casemaker's marking that is possibly "I U" but is somewhat indistinct with wear, outer containing paper for Reader of Cranbrook, signed white enamel dial, hacking slide under upper right of dial, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock having an urn at its neck, s#1857. This watch may be a product of James Smith & Son, listed in Brian Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" as active circa 1785 to 1790 in Bunhill Row, London.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good hacking function, good calendar function, sweep-seconds-hand with frequent tendency to skip and then jump a beat, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, few small fine scratches, typical scattered micro-fine scratches; dial with hls radiating from center of calendar register, flake or small chip to right rim of calendar register hole, few scattered very small fine scratches and surface nicks; excellent hands; outer case shows ample wear, shallow dent with associated surface dings and nicks to left perimeter of rear, gilt finish substantially lost with portions remaining being primarily at perimeter of bezel and rear, button latch good; inner case shows medium wear, some scratches adjacent right side of hinge, few small nicks, ample gilt loss to bezel and to portions of perimeter; bow pivots freely; good domed glass bull's-eye crystal with few small fine scratches and finish bubbles.
